The Springfield College Academic Success Center hosted its annual celebration to induct new members and chapter officers into the College’s Zeta Upsilon Chapter of Delta Alpha Pi (DAPi) Honor Society, on April 26, 2022. DAPi is the first organization to establish an honor society to recognize students with disabilities for their high academic achievement.
The Induction Ceremony speaker was Erica D’Agostino, senior executive director of the Arthritis Foundation of New England.
This year’s inductees joined the sixty-nine undergraduate students and sixteen graduate students of the last two cohorts, inducted into the honor society in the spring of 2020 and 2021.
Introduced during the 2019-20 academic year, DAPi is a student driven chapter that affords members the opportunity to not only commemorate their academic excellence, but also encourages students to exercise their leadership and advocacy skills by leading and participating in campus wide-awareness events to help remove the stigma and negative perception of disability.
To become a member, all students must have a documented disability, work with one of the Springfield College Academic Success Center’s disability and accessibility services professionals, and have a demonstrated interest in addressing disability-related issues. Undergraduate students must have completed at least 24 credits, and have a grade-point-average of 3.1 or better. Graduate students need to earn at least 18 credits, and maintain a grade-point-average of 3.3 or better.
Completing its third year of activity on the campus, the Zeta Upsilon Chapter continues its hard work to keep building awareness on the Springfield College campus.
“This student organization has made tremendous progress since its formation during the COVID era,” said chapter advisor Camille Elliott. “We have more than 120 members. This year we collaborated with the Student Affairs Office on an event to educate the campus community, celebrate inclusion, and help remove the stigma and negative perception of disability. We are making a difference”
