RECOGNIZED FOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS:
Linda Davis-Delano, PhD, professor of physical education and director of educator preparation and licensure, received the Joseph McKenney Award from the Massachusetts Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance in May 2021. The Joseph McKenney Award is the highest award given by the association and is bestowed on a professional in recognition of distinguished service.
Steven W. Groccia, PhD, assistant professor of physical education; Michelle Moosbrugger, PhD, associate professor of physical education, Department of Physical Education and Health Education co-chair, and graduate coordinator; and Kevin M. Mirando ’17, G’19, co-authored “Parent perceptions of a college physical education program for homeschool students” in The Physical Educator in May 2021.
Longxi Li, MS, doctoral student in physical education teaching and administration, was the lead author on an article titled “Physical activity participation and the environment in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis protocol” in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health in June 2021. His co-author was Michelle Moosbrugger, PhD, associate professor of physical education and chair of the Department of Physical Education and Health Education
Mara Simon, EdD, assistant professor of physical education and health education, received the Young Scholar Award from the International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education in June 2021. The award honors early career scholars who have made an outstanding contribution to the field and who demonstrate scholarly promise.
Mara Simon, EdD, assistant professor of physical education and health education, co-authored “A call for social justice researchers: Intersectionality as a framework for the study of human movement and education” in Kinesiology Review in May 2021. Mara Simon, EdD, and Korey Boyd, PhD, assistant professors of physical education and health education, co-authored “Culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogies for and by Black and Latinx preservice physical education teachers” in the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education in 2021. The two also co-authored
“Cracks in the narrative: Black and Latinx pre-service PE teachers in predominantly white PETE programs” in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy in September 2021. In 2020, Boyd co-authored “Promoting the 50 million strong agenda through sport education” in the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
Charlie A. Sullivan, MEd, professor of physical education and head men’s volleyball coach, authored the book Coaching Youth Sports: Guidelines to Ensure Development of Young Athletes, published in September 2021.
Nicole Wassell, MA, assistant professor of physical education and health education; Lori Vaughn, OTD, professor and chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy; and Elizabeth McAnulty, OTD, associate professor of occupational therapy; co-presented “Online IPE assignment modification: Adapted physical education and occupational therapy collaboration during the pandemic” at the Interprofessional Education Collaborative virtual poster fair in October 2021. Zhan Liu, PhD, professor of physical education, has been selected as the National Athletic Trainers’ Association International Partner Award recipient for 2022. The award recognizes a professional organization or individual(s) who demonstrates a documented contribution to the advancement of athletic training, athletic therapy, sports medicine, or injury care and prevention. While Liu is not an athletic trainer, he saw the need for China to modernize athletic health care and worked with the government, institutions, and organization to promote the field of athletic training.
